Description: The favorite of the eastern province, Filila is the very essence of the harvest. It is she who makes the plants grow and produce food. At the time of harvest it is she who reaps the deaths of all her lushly grown produce. She is portrayed as a gentle mother figure most of the year but at harvest time she becomes a blood thirsty goddess of death. Her priesthood are mostly female, but those few brave male souls who join in her worship, pay the price at harvest time. While the farmers are bringing in her crops, the priests are expected to offer personal blood sacrifices to the fields. Often this takes place by hanging the priest by his wrists over the field and creating numerous shallow wounds that will bleed into the soil. In years of famine or drought deeper wounds are used, up to and including castration.
